I suspect part of what people might be mistaking for vinyl's quality (besides sentimental attachment to the pops and crackles) is actually that vinyl is often mixed/mastered differently than other media! Most vinyl was from prior to "the loudness wars" for one thing. But also when mastering for multiple media, you have to take into account the environment in which your "demographic " are listening and adjust for it. Nobody listens to vinyl in a car, or through their phone. Vinyl collectors are presumably more invested in their listening experience such that they'll typically have a proper stereo in a dedicated listening space.

Playing Vinyl is a vibe, it’s a state of mind, a ritual, just like going to church

I understand the scientific reasons why "THERE IS NO DEBATE," but I firmly believe that sampling rate vs. neurological signal rate, resolution/accuracy, and such considerations, are not the be-all and end-all. So I contest that (politely) in the strongest terms! I firmly believe there's a palpably real 'spiritual' aspect that confers greater 'truth' of a wave form that hasn't been chopped into millions of pieces and then reconstituted, as well as all the more obvious 'warmth' of older media and equipment that people talk about (the latter being to some extent benign distortion of course). But above all thank you as ever, Samuel! 🙏

Vinyl is great. But for classical, CDs are ideal. The clarity of a CD is supreme. It's the only way you can get concert hall-like clarity

in terms of orchestral music, yes, it is mystifying why anyone would prefer Vinyl over CD which has the greatest dynamic range of any format.

The one thing that vinyl consistently does better than CD, is (on a high end system), creates a more 3d soundstage and image. CD tends to flatten the soundstage. 24/192 and DSD doesn't have that problem. But, I still buy quite a bit used vinyl, not for the sake of nostalgia.

When I was first getting into classical music and only knew the “hits”, I was looking for a vinyl record that had Ravel’s Bolero on it, and ended up finding a 10 LP box set of Ravel’s complete orchestral works in a bargain bin for $6. That was before I knew anything of his other works, but now he is my favorite composer because I was so excited to have found such a steal that I listened to all 10 records obsessively.

I love your choices. Huge fan of Balinese gamelan here, especially hearing it in person.

If vinyl is almost free, shipping costs are insane.

I don’t care for the sound quality, I just think look neat! Also just owning the physical music feels nice after a long time of “renting” it from companies

That's why I like vinyl, the unusual finds. Unfortunately I'm surrounded by people who are convinced that the sound quality is just better for no rational reason. Most of what they attribute to vinyl is attributable to the quality of their equipment and listening environment.

The sound quality of analog versus digital is the prime consideration.

I thought it was pointless but you make a great point about a lot of deprecated content and also how cheap it is. Also, that is a lovely room

On Spotify I am seeing a ton of Balinese music, hours of Oliver Knussen, 30+ hits on Jolivet, etc. No reason for a nonmaterialistic person like me to have shelves of vinyl that somebody would have to agonize over what to do with after I'm gone

what do you think about fully analog discs though - i think they sound better for certain recordings

Vinyls are just a way for record companies to charge absurd prices for physical media.0
