I know other people have said this, but they lack some detail to help identify what an AK-47 really is so let me nerd out for a second. Or an hour. We'll see how long this gets. There are very few AK-47s in the world. Those guns would have to be the ones created and hand fitted by Kalashnikov for testing by the Soviets in 1947. Every actual production AK is not a 47. The first were the AK Type 1s, 2s, and 3s. The AK Type 1 had a stamped sheet metal receiver, but the Soviet stampings were so poor that they had a 70% reject rate. Instead they substituted with the AK Type 2 and Type 3, which had milled receivers, while they worked on the stampings. When the Soviets finally improved the stamping technology to have an acceptable reject rate they created the AKM, with the M standing for modernized. Most AKs are AKMs, or some variation within. You can tell it's an AKM because the receiver is not milled and is made of a sheet of steel that's usually a little thicker than 1mm. You can easily tell if an AK has a stamped receiver from the strengthening dimples above the magwell. These dimples are clearly pressed in and not carved out, and are typically about an inch or so long. AKs with milled receivers have a lightning cut that is significantly larger a little more to the left of where the dimple on your AK is. Not all AKs with stamped receivers are AKMs, however, although the vast majority of them are. Because of that and the monstrous length of this comment already, I wont get into distinctions about the AK 74 and 100 series, but feel free to look them up if you're interested. Oh, and don't worry about the guy who said to get a “real” AK mag. Magpul is the best of the best, so your mag is just fine. I hope this was helpful and/or interesting. Happy hunting!
