Important to note that this is not about the beauty of a performance, but rather the accuracy. If you’re neglecting the details that are blatantly embedded in the score, then you can’t be deemed a faithful performer of that composer’s work - which is fine, to an extent. Liszt and Rachmaninoff didn’t even play their own works faithfully.
However, it’s a shame that many pianists these days seem to be more interested in recreating their favorite performances rather than investigating the articulations/dynamics/other remarks that these composers meticulously penned in. For the works of someone like Alkan, these additional articulations/text directions are crucial to a proper performance/interpretation.
