STOP DOING THIS!!!!
Today I have another fitness myth busted!!!
Stop wearing ankle weights for cardio!!!

Wearing ankle weights during cardio exercises like running, step, walking, or kickboxing can have potential drawbacks and may not be recommended for everyone. Here are some reasons why it might be considered bad:

Joint Strain: Ankle weights can increase the stress on your joints, particularly on the knees, hips, and ankles. This added strain may contribute to joint pain, discomfort, and potential long-term damage.

Altered Biomechanics: The extra weight can alter your natural body mechanics and gait. This alteration may lead to inefficient movement patterns and an increased risk of injury.

Muscle Imbalances: Ankle weights can create muscle imbalances by placing additional load on certain muscles while neglecting others. This can lead to uneven development and may contribute to overuse injuries.

Increased Cardiovascular Demand: Carrying extra weight during cardio exercises can elevate your heart rate and increase the demand on your cardiovascular system. While this might seem like a benefit, it can be excessive for some individuals, especially those with pre-existing cardiovascular conditions. Although burning extra calories seems great, is it worth the risk of injuring yourself?

Risk of Falls: The added weight can affect your balance and coordination, increasing the risk of falls and injuries during dynamic movements like running or kickboxing.

Overuse Injuries: Ankle weights can contribute to overuse injuries, as the additional stress on joints and muscles may lead to fatigue and strain over time.

Not Suitable for Everyone: People with certain health conditions or injuries, such as arthritis, joint problems, or previous injuries, may find ankle weights unsuitable as they can exacerbate existing issues.

It's important to note that ankle weights can be appropriate in specific rehabilitation or training programs under the guidance of a qualified fitness professional or healthcare provider. However, for general cardio exercises, many experts recommend focusing on proper form, gradually increasing intensity, and using alternative methods to enhance cardiovascular fitness without unnecessary strain on the joints. Always consult with a fitness professional or healthcare provider before incorporating ankle weights into your exercise routine.

I always wondered about ankle weights. Thank you for the tip. I was always told that if you want to add weight to a cardio workout to wear a weighted vest or backpack. The weights must be close to the body so you don’t hurt yourself.

Love the dramatization while wearing those ankle weights. Made me giggle. And those glasses are fire! P.S. I only use my ankle weights when doing PT exercises similar to the ones you showed.

So agree. I learned the hard way and never used more then 3 pounds. There are instructors who still use them during cardio😉 another reaaon people need to be VERY careful who they follow on YT. Not all YT instructors are the best advisors. Some should not even be "teaching". Chris, thank you for this advice. Hip flexor injuries are NO fun and I had a LONG recovery because I truly believed ankle weights were the bomb during cardio for a long time. I cringe at the thought now.😬😬 I'm so happy I "have" you!!!❤
