😂😂😂 when my stepmom had a brain tumor, we all laughed and said that explains so much. She ended up having a total of 3 brain surgeries for a non-malignant tumor but it just kept coming back more and more aggressively. She eventually passed away and we miss and love her and laugh at what a wonderful sense of humor she had all the way to the end. I love you always Nae-Nae. ❤

A high school friend had brain surgery. After some time, she ran for village treasurer. Her slogan was something like, "I can do a better job with half a brain!" She WON the election! 🤣🤣

My children were early teens when I had my first brain surgery. It was definitely frightening for everyone, so I did the very best I could to ease some of the fear by using humor to keep things light. After surgery #4, everyone started joking about how I was heading in for my next “routine brain surgery”. While the procedure may be “routine” for the neurosurgeon, brain surgery is never routine for the patient. It’s scary every time! My last surgery (#14), was for something completely new- a mass popped up in my brain that was never previously there! That took fear to a whole new level for me!

My children's father is an addict, it's why we are not together. But he snorted as much as he could and developed a brain bleed. The brain bleed led to him falling, over and over. The last fall was on a concrete sidewalk. He didn't even put his hands out to help himself. Lucky for him, someone was looking out their window and saw his head hit the concrete and called 911. Emergency 4 ¹/² hour brain surgery. We had to move him back in until he recovered. Brain injuries are no joke.

Many people use humor to get through a horrific situation. It's not because they _"don't care," but rather it's a way to cope.

My husband had brain surgery removing a malignant combination of glioblastoma and another cancer cell. It is terminal. He will die, so I hope that people realize that they may not realize that they find out their loved one will die even though they spent 7 hours in surgery removing the 6 cm. tumor. So far after surgery: 10 months of treatments and seizures and drug trials. Life expectation is not good so jokes like this is not too funny for most of us.

I remember when my mom had chiari surgery in 2002. I was supposed to be at band camp but ditched it. 😅 my brothers were in college and told my mom who was half out of it that they weren’t sure if she was going to make it. (She did get meningitis after the surgery but that wasn’t presenting any symptoms at that moment). My neighbor pulled me aside after I faked going to band camp and told me not to take her cigarette and say hey mom you look like sh*t. Oh and she called me out on not attending camp and said to not mention that to her either. How did she know? Rest her soul she was so crass. Ugh

That’s fair. However, some people use humor to cope with tough situations, so maybe that’s just how this family operates. For context, that picture of Martin is a pretty well known reference amongst people in the Black community who grew up watching the popular Black sitcom. If a family member of mine showed me that picture after I had come out of surgery, I would laugh, too, especially if it was my mom or sister who used to watch that show on repeat with me. Of course every culture isn’t going to deal with things the same way and every person within a certain culture isn’t going to subscribe to the norms within that culture, but I will say that it’s not uncommon for Black people to roast each other like this in any setting, especially if the surgery (i.e., the traumatic part) is somewhat behind them.
