So true. And don't create volcano mulch around it. The larger the tree planted, the longer you will have to baby it-plant the smallest (youngest) tree you can stand.

May I add to your list? Don’t plant trees that grow 15 plus feet, too close to each other, or to any important buildings, hydro/power wires, or fences. Honestly this practise causes more damage and heartache than any other tree planting mistake. In our present home, the previous owner planted an expensive cypress that grows to more than 30 feet, less than 3 feet from the foundation….and….in keeping with the number 3….he planted 2 more. We had to use a tractor loader and some intense elbow grease, hand digging to remove and replant these trees, (which had reached 12 plus feet,) 1 of which didn’t make it. Losing beautiful trees like this due to foolish planting is a darn shame.
