A weed is a plant where you don't want a plant.

Weeds are just looking for a place to live. Anti-weed prejudice is a form of herbal discrimination.

if you want to know whether something is a plant or a weed, step on it. if it survives, it's a weed. more seriously, "noxious weed" is a legal term for a plant that is not native to an area, but will take over and kill off native plants. a lot of officially listed noxious weeds were introduced as garden plants.

You’re right Diane. A weed is something considered invasive, like dandelions(Irish daisies) in your yard. Weeds are removed because they take up space and energy from the actual plant you’re trying to grow. They are usually super hardy because most of the time people are trying to kill them, yet they still exist. So weeds can often wipe out the plant you wanted there if left unchecked.

I have a question for Diane, “do telephone polls ever get jealous of trees?” 😂

As long as they aren't killing the native vegetation.

Certain “weeds” such as dandelions are very useful for things like tea and wind. Others, like kudzu, are invasive imports designed to solve one problem and create another. I’m not sure snobbery is quite the word when discussing the distinction between weeds and plants. I think weeds are often thought of as invasive plants that choke out others and are difficult to dig out. On the other hand some consider bluets a weed, yet a lawn covered in bluets is hauntingly beautiful for several weeks each spring. Some trees are akin to weeds and we call them scrub. Thanks for an interesting and somewhat philosophical post today. It made me pause to think about my Aunt Joyce Glynn who was a Master Gardener and always had a wonderful yard and garden timed to look lovely at all times of the year. She was wickedly funny and a great family hostess. She died of Covid because I fear, she was living in Florida that Winter. Just love the look you are wearing today! ❤

Agree. Many so called weeds have beautiful flowers and are useful. 💐🌷 🌸

Totally slut shaming. They are - well, active - and that begets jealousy. "Oh, I was well raised, so I stay put and just flower once a year."

Some weeds are pretty tasty. Dandelions, plantain, dock, wild garlic, etc. It's free food without having to plant or care for it. What a deal.

Thanks Diane! As long as it’s not an invasive species I say let it grow. I kinda root (pun) for the plants that pick a really weird place to grow.

Weeds are tough. They don't need no pampering, they can make it just fine on their own.
