Got my first proper watch, nowhere near the budget these guys throw around.
£330 for a tissot prx quartz with the green dial and I absolutely love it.

My Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean is a great $5000 watch, also my Breitling SuperOcean 44 is a good one and the same price range..

Think Longines could be where it's at for a lot of people.
Think the Conquest Chronograph is an excellent choice for ~4k. Especially with the brand's history with Chronographs. They were the first.

This is why I buy rolex...my wife bought me a 36mm datejust for our wedding back in 2004 for like $5000. That same watch is still worth $5000 (give or take). It's not "an investment" unless you're lucky. But it's instantly liquid and it won't depreciate much, if at all. Imagine enjoying an object almost daily for 20 years and having the cost be nearly nothing. Also, if I die, my son has a wonderful heirloom.
I while back I stopped upgrading my luxury car. I felt I could enjoy luxury far more on my wrist. So instead of dropping $20-25k every 3 years... I buy a beautiful rolex and get new tires for my 2013 audi. After 15 years, I've got more that $55-75k in watches... and the car is just fine. No rust. Looks great.
My wealthy clients respect a fine watch. They view a new audience as a waste.

Lot of options in that price range, assuming you’re not into watches then yes, Rolex and Omega, but if that’s the case do not buy vintage, you need a certain amount of knowledge before you can properly identify an actual vintage watch, and the big part is maintaining it because if you’re in this crowd, it’s gonna be your daily driver. I personally much prefer longines offerings in that range, cuz at the 5k price point, I don’t think you can get a proper omega or Rolex unless pre-owed or gray market, and not sure if you want to do that for your first watch.

I like the vintage Rolex, Cartier are nice but seem like a lot of money for what you actually get. For that sort of price I’d first look at Breitling and Tudor, maybe Tag Heuer

I bought a tudor first, then an omega and my third expensive watch was a datejust.
You don't really have to buy a rolex for your first expensive watch. Buy what you like.

Good choices.. but i just don't get the Santos appeal. I get the Cartier appeal... but not the Santos.. why not a Tank (any one of the may many Cartier makes).
Cartier Tank defines the Cartier brand in my mind
