For blender users: Import = append Reference = link

I would love a tutorial on this. All the ones I seen are very basic and don’t cover namespaces or mesh proxies.

For those interested. Standard importing increases the size because youre copying the data and writing it to your current scene on disk. Referencing doesnt do this because youre just creating a "link" to the location of where your data is on disk and when its need the data is loaded into ram for use.

That's good and all but when you reference it also limits a few things when animating such as that the objects can't be linked on the hand for example or vice versa. To my knowledge is best to import the thing you are about to animate and then reference backgrounds and all that where the character won't be interacting with. Alternatively you can just build the background to blender or unreal and have the render be done there which save literal weeks of rendering in Maya in lesser quality.

Make sure that the scale and frame rate of your referenced file is the same as what you're going to want in your final shot.

Referencing is what's helping me and team with our senior short.

If your end product is a render out of Maya, choose reference for all the reasons you stated. The exception where you may want to chose an import over a reference is if you need to export your animation for use in another program, such as a game engine.

This doesn't really apply for animation, however. Unless you want to spend time searching for the rig and reparenting it, it's better to import/append the model If you ever need to change something, you can just go back to the og file and make your changes there.

Referencing is better for sure , but my friend lost all her animations for some reason ,tried everything but we couldn't reattach the animation to the reference again

well, it really depends because we are working on a project and we have references of references and it´s better if you import sometimes, maya gets craaaaazy wth a lot of references

And people who are part of earlier parts of the pipeline name your files correctly because people later in the pipeline will most likely reference your file and if it´s not named correctly it can cause problems

Yes in theory this is better but im working in a project using references and many many problems are appearing due to this.

Why does it now allow me to make constraints between 2 references? When I try, it cause the connection to freak out

What would be the Blender equivalent? Append or Link?
