I do think there is a correlation between how you hear and what you are writing... I think people should try both, and they should reflect what is better, and they can if they want, think about their music and it's characteristics, and if they benefit from being at the piano... I think a lot of composers just aren't that good as pianists were they can just play what they are writing... It also depends on the particular methods and systems you are using, I like to work in different ways for different pieces, and some I need the piano, some I need nothing and some I need to just have it in notation software so that I can get an accurate picture. Sometimes I don't even need that accurate of a picture... Heck, I've written at least two pieces where I just came up with a good enough model, and I wrote the piece out according to the model, making the decisions open for me and I only check in the very end if I like the result, and then I add embelishments (I think a lot of comtemporary composers do care too much about structures, I do care about them, and I often respect the structure in it's entirity, however, like the tonal system's ornaments can be chromatic, I think any system can have a open layer you can be free in in it's texture, it complicates analysis, but it makes it a good challenge đ

Composers may need to feel how their sonorities connect to the brain stem. Motor planning circuits in the brain connected to audio processing and sound articulation may need to be rehearsed, rewired or revitalized (actors do this all the time with their material). Motoric expression at the keyboard is one way of doing that. Obviously, excessive reliance on the keyboard detracts from musical imagination, even for accomplished keyboard soloists.

I find the composition process fascinating. Especially how all of us do it differently. Few of my compositions are composed with an instrument. The pieces I do compose with an instrument are often just melodies and chords. Very similar to a jazz "real book" or something. For instance, I wouldn't mind my music being interpreted different ways... I feel once I've put it "out", it's not mine anymore, it belongs to either to the listener or the performer.
