Missing Range of Motion: Side Bend

We don’t often think about side flexion in fitness but the ability to lengthen one side while contracting the other has a lot of practical benefits for athletic endeavors. The Side Bend, done cross-legged or in a straddle position, allows you to explore that range of motion.

If sitting cross-legged, work on bringing the shoulder to the same-side knee and reaching the opposite arm overhead. In the straddle position, work on reaching toward the toes and bringing the torso to the thigh.

I can’t thank you enough for the stretching tools! I have gone to see an orthopedic surgeon for ongoing hip pain. It’s progresses after the birth of our 4th kiddo. I exercise regularly, but in the last year I have been somewhat limited in what I can now do. Sitting is the worst for my hip. Anyway…I really don’t want the extreme option of surgery. I’ve started doing your recommended stretches for the sides, back, hips, etc. I am feeling so much improvement, thank you!!!

Making it more active and strengthening through the range of flexibility is awesome imo. Using something like a Roman chair or a yoga ball to have your body at 45 degrees and then doing the side bends is really good! Great for the Quadratus Lumborum :)
