Where video rental stores once dominated the American landscape, this store in Seattle on Roosevelt Way NE is now one of a handful of its kind, still hanging on.
In a news release, those working in the store posted, âSadly, all of our valiant efforts to keep things going at Scarecrow have stalled. Rentals and sales revenue, which were a huge part of what has sustained us, especially in those early years, are now 40% less than in 2015. In the same timeframe, our major expenses have increased by 25%.â They went on to say private and institutional funding has decreased.
The pandemic era also hastened and solidified the change in how people watch movies, TV shows, and documentaries. The days of going to a store to rent a movie are now a fond memory instead of a weekly routine.

But that day is long over. Sell your collection to enthusiasts and call it a day. Know when your season is done. You should've started divesting from tapes 20 years ago, but you were entitled, impractical, and overly sentimental.
