Is that Newport News?It looks like a nice neighborhood.I agree real estates not hard people are hard.You could always get a house sitter or security but it looks like an isolated incident or individual.

More like vandalism not squatters but it sucks regardless. Have layers of security, ring sign, motion lights, ring camera with flood lights. It won't prevent everything but security has to be built in to your project and not a response. Hang in there...
