I love that, my mom was happy to buy me clothes that "She liked" and if I liked them too, win/win - but after a while what I liked and what she liked were so different I just started buying my own clothes with the money I'd get from allowance and eventually my first job. It wasn't until I wanna say 5 years ago she started buying me clothes again for my Birthday... and I'm 40!
(LOL her language of love is gift giving and acts of service)... and even to this day she's still like "Do you like the clothes I get you are they your style??" haha <3 my momma.

One of the parental benefits of living in a country with school uniforms is that it takes away the stress of school clothes shopping. Over the summer, all the supermarkets and high street shops stock school shoes, uniform basics and P.E. kits.
The blazers can get a little expensive, though, depending on the school.

Gloria Vanderbilt jeans were the "must haves" for my oldest. As a single mom of 3, I certainly couldn't afford even one pair. She got a paper route (yes that long ago!) and saved a couple hundred dollars. I told her she could now afford a pair. Her response? "Are you kidding? I'm not spending that much on one pair of jeans!" It was a real eye opener for her. Different priorities when your own effort is invested. 😅

My girls are now 10 and 19. Of course I haven't bought anything for my oldest in years because she learned budgeting very early. I shop thrift stores, yard sales, and consignment stores frequently. Both kids have inherited my love of discounts and still would rather try a thrift store first before going to Target or mall. My oldest had me "teach" our youth group kids and her high school/ college bound friends this skill too. Some of my FAVORITE times were filling up my car full of tweens/teens (both boys and girls) and head to the thrift store. They learned early how to thrift for basic items to formal wear and still be able to afford new more expensive items like shoes or designer items. I loved watching kids find virtually the exact same t-shirt at the thrift store for $4 and at the mall for $30. It is so empowering for kids to learn how to spend their money wisely.

The way my mom did it, she'd continue to buy us clothes if we wanted her to. But she usually bought them without us there and from a store similar to Walmart. She loves shopping sales, it gives her a thrill to get the best deal possible, so she'd just randomly come home with whatever she thought we'd like. If we wanted a choice, and from a higher end store, it was on us to use our money from our after school job. It felt pretty seamless, we didn't even really discuss it as a plan, it just felt natural.

It clicked at some point as an adult that the $300 coat for sale could last me decades
