This happened to me with Vagrantsong.
Was SUPER hyped for it. LOVE the theme and the art style. Sounded like a really cool, narrative-driven, campaign game with a theme that my friends could get into.
Was aware of the sub-par rulebook, so I read it over multiple times before our first session. Checked out all the FAQs and BGG threads. Thought i had a handle on it.
First session... still had tons of rules questions and confusion and it lasted FOUR hours and was brutally hard... for the intro tutorial!
Thought maybe we played it wrong. Went back over everything AGAIN. Tried a second time. Didn't go much better. Haven't played since unfortunately....
And it's rough because it's so hyped up from so many people and I just can't understand how their experiences went so well!

I try REALLY hard to figure out why I didn't like it. Not just my gut reaction, analyze the design and make sure that I didn't hit a particularly bad run of luck or that we missed a rule or something. I want to give each game a chance. And if I don't like it after I'm done dissecting it, I now can compare that to other games I like. Is this a rule or mechanism that I should just avoid, or do I like it in other games but the way it was implemented here didn't work?

My most recent one was Mythwind. I played it solo for about 6 sessions totalling 18 hours and realised I'd accidentally 'solved' it. I ended up spending every turn forcing the story along because I was enjoying that, and eventually just started choose your own adventuring through the deck to see it out.
I tried resetting it and playing with my wife, but that was still dull so ended up selling it.
I've heard of people resetting the characters and main board periodically so that there's something to do while you wait for the plot to progress. I'm very glad I didn't support their other game while waiting for Mythwind to be delivered because I'm deeply suspicious of that designer/publisher now.

Depends on the game and the company. I also did not like TM the dice game, so I wrote it off as “meh, it’s not for everyone, I’d rather play the big brother.”
Others I get skeptical because of the hype and it usually doesn’t live up to that so I can say “well glad I tried it.”
The ones I’m excited for that fall flat though, I usually try again with different players, but if it doesn’t hit, I get a little bummed and then move on. So many great games out there, why waste time on the ones you don’t love 😊

First thing I do is make sure I read the rules correctly. I usually didn't read the rules correctly
