I'm so used to wiggling or flicking the stick back and forth from double dash so I still do it unconsciously today. I know it's not how it works in 8 deluxe, but it's hard to break the habit.

When I was new to this game, I immediately gravitated to bikes because they are so good at soft drifting. You could basically go straight by soft drifting.

The reason this works is because of a mechanic unofficially called the boost counter. Pretty much what the boost counter is for those unaware is a hidden timer that tracks how many active frames you’ve been charging a drift for. In Mario Kart 8 Deluxe specifically, the boost counter was adjusted to have Mini-Turbo startup frames dependent on your hidden Mini-Turbo stat, with higher Mini-Turbo stats requiring less frames for the boost counter per Mini-Turbo charge level.

Something I was confused about for a while before I really understood the purpose of soft drifting: Drifting as tightly or as shallow as you can actually slightly decreases your speed. Soft drifting is important because it lets you get the faster mini-turbo charge from a harsh inside drift without losing speed.

Fun fact: I didn't know the mini-turbo had a 3rd level until YESTERDAY. I DIDNT KNOW THE PURPLE ONE EXISTED UNTIL YESTERDAY.

I never really noticed that there were 2 types of drifting, but my hand still immediately adjusted to it when I did mini turbos anyway despite not knowing this was a thing.
