I personally would have used the other side of the board so I wasn't cutting through that nasty knot. Or adjusted my layout to cut around the know or cut it out completely.

Curious as to why a pinewood stringer vs an LVL? My boss has had me switch to LVL's in recent times due to stringers being warped, broken, imperfections, etc.
