I lived in Portland for 7 years love Multnomah falls but its to developed, and to many people, id suggest hiking Multnomah falls to the top, but then continuing up the trail 7 miles, you can hike all the way to Larch mountain, or you can cut off at the turn off to devils peak (or go the other way to angel falls, bridal vail is also past devils peak) there are a tin of great loops you can make where you'll be away from the crowds get a good map and go for it.
For those really wanting to test their legs/lungs continue (driving) past Multnomah falls and go to starvation creek, and hike to the top of Mt defiance, that ones brutal but well worth it.
Eagles rest is another good one, the Columbia River gorge is beautiful.
Oh yeah and the Washington side of the gorge Dog mountain is a good intermediate hike.

Salt Creek Falls may not be as tall but is in my opinion far more beautiful.
Especially if you hike to the bottom.
The bottom of saltcreek falls is in a canyon that makes it feel like you've been transported somewhere else.
Salt creek is about 54 miles east of Eugene Oregon, and is well worth the drive if your in the area.
And if your in shape, and wanting a good hike you can hike up to Vivian lake from the Salt creek parking lot.
