Fun fact - if tips don't compensate you up to the federal minimum wage, your employer is required to make up the difference. It's not a lot, but every bit does help.

I worked as a server and came to realize tipping is a gratuity. It's supposed to be based on the quality of service you receive. Sometimes I received nothing and sometimes I received 20%. I remembered those people so when they returned, they got the service they deserved.

Only in American do restaurant owners expect customers to pay their staffs wages, In Australia and the uk, real wages are paid so that employees don’t have to depend on these idiots to be able to live and pay their bills. Ridiculous, just pay your staff what they deserve and this won’t happen!

Aggressively approaching regulars and demanding a tip is what started the fight. Even if it wasn't aggressive, it clearly was combative. I am tired of American culture where people are being forced to compensate for employers who refuse to pay their employee's an appropriate wage. I also don't like being pressured to overpay for mediocre food and poor service. Tipping culture should be banned and it's been causing a lot of issues over the years in many categories, including food delivery. I have delivered and ordered food and I will say the prices paid to drivers are bare minimum - BUT the ridiculous amounts charged to customers, including hidden fees and upcharging the price of the menu beyond what things are currently priced at makes the situation unfair on both ends.

The customers shouldn't have thrown things, but I would have left the restaurant too. These people are regulars. They go to your restaurant often enough for you to recognize them. You are going lose regular customers over a few dollars. They need to make all customers aware that they will be adding mandatory service/tip charge on to bill going forward.
