I know a guy who's mom tried this. He already knew the child wasn't his. He got with the girl after she was already pregnant (she was SA'd) Loved her so much he decided to take on the child. But to keep his family from mistreating the child, he just told everyone it was his. The mom was out of pocket here. I totally understand voicing her concerns and wanting to make sure he's thinking things through, but if that man is committed to what he has, you're only pushing him away by overstepping boundaries.

My son was off to basic training, a girl came waving 4 pg positive tests saying she was pg from my son...I knew it wasn't his,cus they weren't together long enough for her to been pg from my son. I showed him his baby photos, his Dad's, mine, & siblings(we all resemble each other. I put the babys photos at 2 weeks old she had next to my son's baby photos.. He said ,"what are you telling me..i Said NADA, what are you thinking? He said, i need a DNA. He took em for a DNA, NOT THE FATHER!! The Mom didn't want to get DNA, she sed it's up to the baby when she's older.Oh HELL NO!! She left w her tail between her legs.. My son later had a new gf, this other witch kept trying to break them up.. She had the nerve to "TRY" to encourage me to encourage my son to put a restraining order on new gf. I told my son to tell her to "F" OFF, she finally did. Thank God! She recently found another US soldier to mess up his life.

DNA tests should be done at birth. Then, things like this would not happen.
Edit - To clarify I think the grandma was dead wrong. I think that legally she should not have been able to do that. And while I think DNA tests should be mandatory I think they should be sealed and only one of the parents on birth certificate, child after 18, or someone who feels that his child is being kept from him should be able to petition to the courts to let him know if he is father or not should be able to open it.
Edit My phrasing is poor. Either parent or both parents not just one.
