It is extremely hard to make notes in chords stand out like that so consistently… really impressive

Alexei Sultanov plays those inner voices but only when the phrase repeats, creating a contrast in both sound and mood. I actually prefer his phrasing to Katsaris in these bars but this is exceptionally clear.

I've heard this dozens of times and I'm still floored when I hear it.

How to Godowsky without Godowsky.

Ok I have never heard those two inner melodies brought out. Will listen for them

It reminds me of the way Alexei Sultanov stresses the left hand notes in the middle of Scriabin's Op. 8 No. 12

Honestly I’ll never get why so many people insist there’s a “right way” to playing classical music, or any type of music for that matter. As long as you enjoy the music you play, keep playing!

Hofmann, Godowsky and Rachmaninoff used to bring out inner voices like this to create counter melodies

Oh I played this piece recently! Interesting change in rhythm. It seems a bit more traditional, not using a pedal in the grace notes, but also the fact that he emphasized different notes at different times was interesting. It was a bit like a polonaise, with more emphasis on the third beat.
