As a self taught guitar player before YouTube, the capo allowed me to play many songs along with the album.

Sometimes it has better tone and colors if we use a capo for example on the second fret in a granaina or other palos, so we use the capo even if we can play that song without the capo

Anytime I've ever heard someone criticize using a capo, my first thought was always "okay so you have no clue what you're talking about". It's just a tool that shortens the scale length of a guitar and makes it so you don't have to learn dozens upon dozens of chord shapes.

I never understood why there were always people who dissed capoes and people who used them. That has always been the primary purpose of the capoā€”to adapt a song for the singer. Plus, it also enhances your ears and pitch, teaches you how to transpose, sing a song higher or lower while still in the same key. I went to conservatory and studied classical music, and it has applications there. It can change the tone and character of the song you're playing, depending on your taste. It can give you better control and playability for certain pieces. Yes, it's also an aid for beginners, but it's a practical tool that has real, practical applications for all players who understand how to use them. I was a beginner 20 years ago, and I still use them. Because they have made me a better guitar player, they make me a better singer-songer, and they're practical. Especially when I use different kinds of tunings for my guitarsā€”classical guitars, in particular, are notoriously unstable and difficult to keep in tune when changing tunings a lot. "Ooh, I don't use capos because I have perfect pitch, I know how to play without capos and I know all kinds of music theories"ā€”and yet, the only evidence you can find of their awesome greatness is a 10-year-old profile photo of them holding a G chord. Shut up. The "elitism" of people who have actually never been on the other side of the fence. Don't let any sad, lonely Jim dilettante who works at the auto shop tell you how to play your music! Listen to real musicians, look at how they play, learn from them, and do what's right for you!

My high school music teacher always bragged about not using or ā€œneedingā€ a capo. It seems weird to think of a capo as a crutch: a substitute for /actual/ skill. Personally, my hands are so damn small that a capo is exactly what I need to actually have good technique, sometimes.

Been learning for a few years and it's easier than changing the tuning....and it does help with some of those wonderful B chords lol!

Yes, sometimes pieces sound better a couple of frets up.

Sometime I down-tune and use a capo to have a short scale guitar in standard pitch. Allows for stretches that are beyond my hand in lower registers, also.

Tune my guitar down a half step & use capo for open E standard tuning ( just remember everything moves a fret up - haven't broken an E string yet )

I think capo got a bad reputation because of basic players who don't want to do bar chords or some extending. Also they might confuse some people since the notes are not the same as the standard tuning notation but people do not adjust in sheet music and base it on tabs alone. Other than that, classical players also look down on it a bit since you'd just arrange it in a different key or change the guitar tuning if you'd want something in its original note. But as someone who plays both Flamenco and Classical, I don't really have a problem with it

I have a question about them. Are there good and bad ones? Like should you not buy a cheap one? I need one and Iā€™m literally debating on making one with rubber bands or some shit šŸ˜‚
