The Seattle Police Department said Monday that it will lose more officers this year than it gains.

In 2024, the department had 40 departures and only gained 15, and is projecting more separations than hires this year. The revised projection is that there will only be 918 deployable officers by the end of the year, despite an increase in base pay and $30,000 signing bonuses.

Seattle Mayor Bruce Harrell has been pushing for the city to accept different testing methods in order to speed up the recruiting procedures. But last week, the Public Safety Civil Service Commission suggested staying the course.

Why bother hiring officers when Seattle city prosecutors won't charge crimes?

Who the hell would want to work in Seattle when prosecutors let the criminals free?

It comes from the top & trickles down! And why arrest people that are immediately let out, then you are demeaned for doing your job! Their hands are tied truly protect & serve! Look higher up for the root causes!

I don't know who would want to live, much less be a police officer in Seattle or Portland or Chicago or San Francisco or New York etc... What's the common denominator?

Retirements, that's right. It's not like it has anything to do with defunding the police or turning on your own enforcement.... nice reporting

This is unacceptable--the Mayor and City Council need to do more. No support for the proposed Transportation Levies unless this situation is improved.

Maybe let the cops do their jobs and stop giving criminals a revolving door. I don't know. Sounds crazy.
