Garand thumb is an overblown issue but if it does happen to occur, it’s going to really crush your thumb if you hold it like this

There is a very specific, tried and true method for loading an M1. Blade of palm holding the bolt (no backward pressure) so IF the bolt closes it won't close all the way. It also prevents a negligent discharge because your strong hand is NOT near the trigger. Learn to load your weapons properly. No shortcuts or corner cutting.

Use your right hand and put the side of your hand at the top pinky knuckle and palm of your hand on the charging handle, so when the bolt comes off the lock your hand is still in control of the bolt. My grand dad taught me that he was a marine that fought on Iwo Jima and Nagasaki.

I actually tried this technique and almost snapped my thumb, this does not work with older/worn up rods maybe new-ish ones that lock in place it might work idk I have a older/worn up rod
