This was a TOUGH call. Just my two cents, still think it’s really great, just not AS great as they’ve been. What did you think??

Brave Faces Everyone (specifically the title track) got me through the early pandemic.

I agree with the B+. Very good album, but not as great as i was expecting. Still, Haunted is excelent.

I personally loved this album. Haven’t gotten a chance to hear Brave Faces Everyone since I just discovered them this year, but if it’s as good as you’re saying, I’m super excited for it

Pendulum is a top 3 song of the year. Also jon don’t miss out on Holding Absence’s new record “The Noble Art of Self Destruction” AKA the greatest album of the 2020s thus far

I don’t like holding albums against previous work, but with how beloved BFE was it was kind of inevitable a bit of expectations would seep in. No Joy is a fine record, but not one that I’ll personally come back to as much as their BFE. It probably ranks 3rd behind Schmaltz but ahead of GSTB for me in terms of their discography. The main issue with this record for me is the latter half feel way too similar in terms of sound for me to get a real distinction of their individual benefits. They seem more focused on making “anthem” songs this time, which I suppose could work out since I’ve seen a few people compare them to The Killers with this album - which I hope grants them wider mainstream success in the future. But I do think the songwriting feels a lot more lifeless because of it. With the excepting of Re-Emerging Signs of the apocalypse and Rapture Chaser, I can’t see myself revisiting the other last six songs much. I wouldn’t say I was disappointed by the album myself, there are some bangers on here, and if it does give them a bigger mainstream appeal I’ll be delighted, but it’s a long way away from the band’s best work.

Its by far my least favorite album by them. It's just so meh and bland for me. The album is much slower paced and the back half was a chore to get through. It still has some good songs on it but I was left wanting more. Haunted is by leaps and bounds my favorite song. Nothing comes close to that one. I feel like everything is a step down on this one from the guitars to the lyrics and vocals. It sounds like he's rushing some vocal deliveries and the choruses on most of the songs just feel too wordy and unmemorable. I'm singing all the choruses on their previous albums and this one leaves me so unmoved. I'm super disappointed after their last two project are solid 10s for me. This is like a 6. I have so much to say about this album I've been wracking my brain over it for the past week.

Genuinely think this is their BEST album to date, it's shockingly happy? it's dour for sure but the edge to it is far more about finding joy in the little moments. I appreciate the more mellow sounds and when it gets big it drives the emotions home perfectly! its got some of their catchiest choruses yet and some belter lyrics. I think it's a great follow up to BFE which I also adore!

Still giving it more listens but I think you're right. There's still a lot to love and I think I like it a bit more than you but BFE is easily better. What I will say is that I hope the experimentation on this album leads to more on the next. I want to see this band give me more surprises like Mutable

Schmaltz & Giant Sings the Blues are still their best work to this day imo, I definitely enjoyed No Joy a lot more than Brave Faces Everyone.

Probably their weakest record to date, but still solid. My favorites are Pendulum and Haunted. Least favorite: Middle of Nine
