FIRST RULE OF MIXING 👨🏻‍⚖️

Balance your mix before you do any kind of processing 🫵🏻

You need to make sure everything is aligned ⚖️

That way you won't be adding processing that isn't needed ❌

Because lets be honest, we all tend to add too many plugins than we actually need 🤷🏻‍♂️

So balance the mix first, and the rest will fall into place 👍🏻

The first thing I do in every mix is add reverb with about 50% wetness. Then you don’t even need to EQ anything because you can’t hear anything.

This is something I learned like a year after starting mixing and mastering. I heard it from a beat producer who said that they barely use plug ins, they just mix well.

Editing is included in this! Things like words that are too loud, random pops in the audio, maybe one guitar pluck was WAY louder than it needed to be... Take care of that stuff manually without plugins and when you do get to eqing, compressing and the like, you're working with something that's already been corrected so you barely have to do anything... Otherwise you're running round in circles trying to find the right de-esser for one vocal phrase, when it would take 1 minute to manually just turn the S down...

I instantly add distortion and 80% wet reverb to the master put compressor presets on every track then call it a day

I spent too many years learning advanced mixing moves and plug-ins. But it wasn't until I really started doing this that I felt like a professional. In fact now I barely feel the need to add as many plugins as I did before, they've decreased by like 75% 😂

I call the beginning phase a static mix where you are not doing any automation rides. Just getting a great static mix. Are usually spend about an hour on that before I do any automation 😊

Yes Streaky, it’s obvious but it’s also a dead set Top Tip (not the Viz sort). Cheers mate!

valuable tip

That’s why some people do the top down mixing first. Just put a compressor on the mix bus then see if anything else needs processing after the balance is sorted out

What about when you mix as you go? Meaning as you produce the song then what tips will you give?

I high pass most tracks from the get-go because most things besides bass and drums can be purged of all garbage noise below 100-200hz but other than that this is good advice
