That's interesting! :D As a singer who has just started training my voice with an actual singing teacher (after 12 years of choir and studio singing), I have also gained a lot from starting higher than I would otherwise, as I'm just getting to know my actual comfortable range I have with good technique. Turns out, I am a mezzo instead of an alto and feel very relaxed singing in that range, whereas with my previous bad technique I only felt comfortable in my chest voice. It feels like learning to walk :)

Do you teach music theory along with your singing lessons? I don't have a background in music and I still struggle with the concept of keys, and how to transform them and their relations to each other. I can instinctively sing in key and hear when I'm off key but that's about it, I can't identify keys or tell the difference between them by ear. But I can sing in almost any key, except ones with lots of sharp notes, these are a bit difficult. And I don't know if this is related, but I find the dorian mode the easiest to sing, which coincidences with it being the jazz, blues, and angsty alt rock/grunge rock songs key, the best songs for my voice where it shines the most.

Do you sometimes feel compelled to sing the song in the original key or do you change the key to show off YOUR voice?
