Honestly it reminds me of old GW back in the day when the minis were painted... and in some cases kitbashed... by the staff like the writers, designers, etc and were given credit for their designs and characters.

Same problem I had with 40k a few years ago. The ruleset and printing of models and armies demanded too much time and energy to look over and try to play with randoms. Got completely butt walloped by someone who had a new meta army and understood stratgems and command points vs my older army that was bought and constructed with older rulesets (5-7 editions). Shook my head and havent played since.

It's an interesting problem in game design: the simplicity allows a game to be accessible, and the complexity allows veterans to remain engaged. It seems like those two things are diametrical. What is the best way to handle it? Optional rules? Or having two different systems like Spearhead and regular AoS?

This is why I don’t call Spearhead AoS 4 or 4a or whatever. It may share some rules and the models, but they are so completely different products to me that they shouldn’t be talked about in the same conversation. People that will never play AoS are going to find SH appealing.
