There's only two music genres: I like it! Nah, not for me.

Many people don’t account for overlap, and many others don’t investigate the actual definitions of genres before trying to categorize bands with them.

The are too many "genres" of music. It's become unnecessarily complicated.

Tons of bands move from genre to genre or in other words they play music…😂 I love the thought process behind this. The whole genre thing is limiting, and the awards for best in “class” get even weirder

Genres can be narrowed down to Rock, Country, Blues, Jazz, Opera, Regional/Traditional and Religious with many crossovers. Yes, there are sub-genres, but most of those were created by The Man at the record company to sell records. Music does evolve over time. Mother Maybelle Carter wouldn't call at least seventy percent of what is labeled Country music today as Country music. Some genres are easy to define, such as Delta Blues is acoustic while Chicago or City Blues is amplified (originally so the music could be heard over the street noise). Honestly, I wouldn't worry too much about genres. When you hear a song for the first time, either classify it as "I Like It!" or "It's not for me." This doesn't take away from recognizing the artist's talent (provided they have any). Some bands or individual artists, no matter how talented, just aren't my cup of tea.

One of my colleagues is close friends with Serj, the lead singer for System of a Down.

Well, genres split off and develop subgenres. Rock and roll splintered into soft rock, AOR (album oriented rock), progressive rock, hard rock, etc. Hard rock splintered into arena rock, heavy metal, punk rock, and so on. Metal splintered into hair metal, classic metal, thrash metal, etc. Punk divided into pop punk, New Wave, hardcore, and on and on. Just remember these words of wisdom from Billy Joel: "Hot funk, cool punk, even if it's old junk, it's still rock and roll to me." 😉

As a big rock & metal fan, I couldn't tell you for the life of me which genre exactly a band or song might be. I just say it's rock (soft/hard), metal (&/or heavy), punk, or death/black.

It happens when a genre gets a bad reputation. Emo got the reputation that fans harm themselves.

Genres make more sense if you’re a musician trying to play that kind of music. Prog metal has uncommon time signatures and inspiration from world music. And emo can describe everything from pop rock in eyeliner like My Chemical Romance to Midwest emo with open tuned guitars with tons of reverb like Mom Jeans.

First off, music is a genre, not the individual "styles" of music. Look at the word "genre" in similar fashion to the word "animal" and the "styles" as "species;" i e, Music, has many styles. Some styles are rock, while others are classical. Some people refer to style as subgenre, which might mean to break down into professional verses nonprofessional, from labeled verses independent, from original verses remix, but always, "music" is the actual genre, just as "painting" and "sculpting" are their own. However, the way "art" is used these days, it is a genre that I guess means "creativeness," because those who use it, do so to include a whole bunch of varying genres.

I generally go by the era. For example, System of a Down appeared during the nu metal era. But if you listen to them, they aren't nu metal. So I'd just call them metal. i guess someone could say 'progressive metal' if they wanted to get fancy.
