I use this process when mixing the whole song towards to the end of processing the tracks. I find if anything that is too loud in a mix, when mixing it very low. Will allow you to hear what instruments are sticking out too much. Then bring down the bus that's got that sound of loud down then bring up the level slowly. You will get a more balanced level. If EQ is set right and need more individual track sound. You can use direction spreader to adjust your bus tracks to different settings which can also help to bring out the different sounds from your bus tracks.

This advice helped me loads back in the day... luckily I knew they meant fader level becuase you aren't ever going to hear what mild compression or eq is doing... not to the point you should be finalising you decisions on those things anyway.. but to bring the volume down...balance it and then bring it up and realised you've done all the mixing you needed to already is amazing when you first discover this... you start to realise you end up trying to get things to fight with each other too much and over mix... I do this all the time now... I do four, maybe 5 big moves and turn it down to have a quick fader balance check to make sure I'm going in the right direction still... when you start doing music the excitement level has you doing jack ass stunts at times with your audio

And for those in a not so quiet area you can also use Pink noise, set the level. Then bring up your elements until they're sitting on top of the pink noise. Pink vst is a simple free tool to use

Nice one! I want to add that its much easier to hear compression and eq when listening quietly Edit: Im monitoring on headphones, for speakers the effectiveness of this may vary
