Always knew .38s were actually .357, but never knew why they were called .38. Learned something new.

I'm embarassed by how old I was when I finally learned that .357 inch, when converted to metric, is roughly... 9mm.

The original .38 cartridge used a heeled bullet like the 22LR. So the lead projectile was the exact same diameter as the brass cartridge case. Hence the 38 designation. The 38 Special uses the same diameter case, but the bullet is the same diameter as the inside of the case, as had become the custom of the time. No more heeled bullets.

What caliber is .38 Special? Big trouble. As my father demonstrates with his S&W 4" Model 15, civilian version of the M15, the standard issue sidearm of the USAF at the time. He was one of the last to change to the M9. He gave me his M15 and 206 rounds., four boxes of 50 rounds and six in the cylinder, USAF/US Government stamps. I got it at 19. I'm 44 now and still have it. He said he wasn't allowing his babies(even though my sister and I were grown?) into the world penniless or defenseless.

Yep! These calibers are actually from the cap and ball days when the case was the cylinder! I.e. there was no case. The ball was .375” and it was seated over loose black powder, friction tight in the chambers. When cartridges came out, the bullet had to get smaller since the case was about 20 thousandths thick, but the barrels still had a groove diameter of 375 (rounded up to 38). Eventually the barrels were adjusted to better fit the bullet, but the name was already established.

I always thought the math on a 38 working in a 357 chamber was a bit off but this cleared that up thanks

I gotta say you're slightly wrong on this one. 38 special is from the 38 colt cartridges which were heel base bullets, where the bullet heel sits in the case and the larger section is the same size as the case(like 22lr) So the original 38 colt cartridges did in fact have a 38 caliber bullet originally but when heel base bullets went away they kept the name. However, the 38 special never had a heel base bullet. It was just a lengthened 38 long colt. Being more powerful made it "special"

I was also surprised to learn that “.38 caliber” is in name only in all cases

I always herd it was to distinguish it from the 36 which was a common black powder ball size in that day.

My Taurus comp gun was 357. I hardly ever used the 38 round as I was often shooting metal silhouette with it. I only really used 38 when I cleaned my gun and test fired it. It was cheaper

That's why if you got a 357 it can also shoot 38, 380,9mm (with moon clips)

and then way before the 357 we had 36. caliber cap and ball revolvers
