For those with no context: a water treadmill is used to rehab a horse due to injury or lack of movement bcus of neglect. The water can carry the horses weight to go faster than a walk on the treadmill. ( Like when I had a spinal injury I learned to walk in a pool first.). But they start without the water in it to not frighten them since its a new thing.

The first time is a dry run, literally. Movement on a treadmill requires a controlled gait. Not too fast and not too slow. It's unlike anything the equine has ever done before. If tolerated, water is introduced slowly in the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th sessions. While water alleviates pressure and reduces inflammation, the controlled gait learned in their first treadmill introduction will still be required. If you lack the funds, a pond has always been a species favorite 😊

Lots of people seem confused or think this is stupid, so I'll repeat a response I made to one of these comments - exercise in water is easier on animals/people that are having issues with injuries, joints, etc. It can be a good form of physical therapy since it takes the weight off the problem area. This looks like they're just trying to get the horse used to the treadmill before they add water.

Fantastic to have access to this. We barely had access to a dog-sized one in my area. I was lucky that the doggo that needed it was more convinient to transport than a horse is, and loved all the pets and attention. I'm so happy to see more and more people seeing horses for the amazing friends they are, and not just a "thing" you use for pleasure that can be discarded when they stop performing 110%, all the time. They'll get a hang of it, I'm sure, what a brave sweetie!

My husband and I own a racehorse farm and on occasion one of our horses may require therapy that we can’t do at our farm. We wind up taking them up to the University of Penn Veterinary hospital, where they have the highest technology in horse recovery. It’s super expensive but worth it. Aqua therapy is one of the treatments. They have them walk on the treadmill, get used to it then fill it with water. Helps take the pressure of their joints. Others go into an actual pool. I’ve had horses love it and others hate it! You can imagine how much fun the latter is. lol.

I had to go in with my little girl she was so nervous After two tries she rather enjoyed the experience and her injuries got better with the hydrotherapy. It is a really good therapy for damage to legs. My dog used it recently and it has made a huge difference to his strength. They were both worth the extra money it cost for the astounding results.
