I had a friend in high school who did exactly what you described. He was very passionate about groups like Mr. Bungle, Zappa, and Beefhart, but he never forced anyone to listen to them or make any statements about the quality of a person's music taste. At the time I found it funny, but over time on my own I started finding more merit in "difficult" music, but only because he had introduced me to the concept in the first place.

People listen to music for different reasons. I actively seek out music that challenges me and expands my imagination, but a lot of people mainly want a quick emotional response from easy familiar music. Both are valid. Music has the power to transform our minds, lift our spirits, and move our bodies. We get what out of it what we put into it

Yeah I went through that "pushing music" for a short period, my friends really only got interested in what I liked when I wasn't trying to get them to like it, like if they listened to what I listened to while I was driving the car. I've stayed pretty hands off with trying to get them to like what I like since then. I've also learned more about music by appreciating what they like.

I recall years ago my sister telling me about a study that she read about the development of musical taste in individuals. One of the conclusions of the study is that for the vast majority of people, musical taste is essentially fixed by the age of 25, maybe even younger. For those who are deliberately more adventurous, of course, the broadening of tastes will likely continue beyond that age. I was exposed to orchestral music regularly from a young age through films of the forties and fifties, and I’m pretty certain this inclined me to liking (really, loving) the richness of modern music.
