It's a very specific tree, the gum doesn't taste like tree bark at all. It's natural gum and it's extremely aromatic. In Greece we also use it for some desserts.

Mastika means gum in Arabic! And apparently in many other languages too, like Greek and Spanish (but it might mean chewing for some).

As a Greek kid I’ve had this sap a lot. The sap was indeed used as gum. The Greek soldiers used to chew it constantly. It can be found in several Greek baked goods as well.

"mastica" in Spanish is basically "chew" so it fits perfectly with the gum name ^^

Mastiha trees are a native in Greece and particularly in the island of Chios only. Their resin is used for medicinal purposes as well as many other. It's very good for health.

More info: Originally Mastic was only produced in Chios, Greece. But in 2006 Turkey planted several thousand Mastic trees in Çeşme which is 8 nautical miles from Chios and has similar ecological conditions. Mastika is a Turkish company, the Mastic is sourced from Çeşme. According to a 2021 analysis, the Turkish Mastic lacked 3 main health benefiting antioxidant and anti-inflammatory components, this could be due to genetically modified saplings. So in the end you're paying a crazy price for a sub par product when you can just get original Greek Mastic for cheap.

For those wondering, the gum comes in packs of 6 and is 70 dollars per pack. This means the pack of gum is 11.66. The gold one is 100 with a pack of 4, which is 25 per pack. It boasts hour long flavor and is said to be sugar free.

For the people who don’t know why it’s so expensive it’s because it's very hard to grow and harvest mastic gum. Mastic gum is a resin that comes from the leaves of the mastic tree (Pistacia lentiscus), which grows in the Mediterranean region, particularly Greece. It's harvested once every seven years, and there are only about 200 trees left on Earth. Plus even the royal families buys these gums Edit: And yes In Greece I’m aware of the fact it is quite cheap there but it’s kinda expensive In other countries I’m sure and it’s sold out from where I’m from
