Therapist here: What he's doing is very healthy and we need more artists like him to work with the ideas in this song. He's basically doing parts of self work, exploring the effects of toxic masculinity on one's ability to work with the self, how to care for one's more difficult parts as hard or "shameful" as they can be, and build a sense of resiliency through difficult experiences. When you constantly run from yourself, you'll always be a stranger to yourself: you can't care for, fix something you're not aware of. Dope song.

Khalid is so talented. I hope he isnât suicidal or depressed like these lyrics imply. I imagine his quick rise to fame leaves him under a lot of pressure daily. I hope he has a good group of supportive people around him and that he knows his fans love him, his music, and the beauty it brings into the world. Such a gift đ

[Verse 1]
I've ran away from love
It's gettin' hard for me to breathe
'Cause the man that I've been runnin' from is inside of me
I tell him, "Keep it quiet"
So all he does is speak
'Cause he wants to keep his distance
But it's hard for him to leave
He knows I hear him cryin'
Cryin' out for help
I don't know how to save him
I can't even save myself
There's many people dyin'
I've always been afraid
Not that I'm scared of livin'
I'm scared of feeling pain
[Chorus]
I don't need another hand, I need a couple suggestions
Always had a little trouble with self-reflections
Now, does my raw emotion make me less of a man? Hm
Always had a little trouble with self-reflections
[Verse 2]
I've been so used to winnin'
It was hard for me to lose
No, there's nothing wrong with me
There's just something wrong with you
So I've been making changes
Been workin' on my health
No more competition
Can't compete against myself, no, no, no
I'm not doin' this to be loved, no, no
I've been doin' this to be remembered
Let the people hear it if they want to
All the one's around me gettin' onto
If I die tomorrow and I'm gone
Let the blood run high
Let the carpets drown
I'll be forever numb
[Chorus]
I don't need another hand, I need a couple suggestions
Always had a little trouble with self-reflections
Now, does my raw emotion make me less of a man? Hm
Always had a little trouble with self-reflections
I don't need another hand, I need a couple suggestions
Always had a little trouble with self-reflections
Now, does my raw emotion make me less of a man? Hm
Always had a little trouble with self-reflections
[Outro]
Let this be a promise
That when it's said and done
Be a flower in a garden
Be born with the sun
Be born with the sun
Be born with the sun
Be born with the sun
Be born with the sun

In the beginning of the song there is this person inside of him that is a hard worker and a higher version of him self ( which is him rn )
But the person singing the first part of the song is a version of the old , worse , not so hardworking person. That guy inside just wants to win.
Later in the song the person inside finally escapes and is now being the beat version of himself but is to arrogant and ignorant.
So when he said â Iâve been making changes , been focusing on my heath â he got rid of that cocky, arrogant guy but still has that WINNING MENTALITY in him by saying â no more competition, canât compete myself â
He still has the mentality but isnât rude or ignorant

This whole album is a rollercoaster of emotions through Khalidâs relationship.
It starts with SATURDAY NIGHTS, heâs talking about a girl who has issues at home and he notices and he cares about her and all her issues. In TWENTY ONE, he talks about her and all her problems and how he can relate to her. Then in PARADISE, he talks about the same girl and how sheâs wasting away her life by pretending she isnât dealing with the issues she has. And how he wants to go deeper into a relationship with her. And then it goes to BETTER, theyâre not quite in a relationship but theyâre still seeing each other and theyâre doing all the relationship things just without the title. Khalid is falling in love here. And then it goes to BLUFFINâ, Khalid wants to know if the girl actually wants to be in a relationship and he doesnât want to be led on. And then in TALK, Khalid at this point is rushing to be in love with this girl but notices that she doesnât want to take that jump into a relationship, so he urges for them to talk about what theyâre doing and where theyâre at. In MY BAD, they start experiencing communication problems and it seems to keep getting worse on both sides. And then in DONâT PRETEND, sheâs starting to ghost Khalid and he notices it and he wants her to call him and express the feelings she has but he knows she wonât. In INTRO, Khalid knows that sheâs about to leave and just wants her to tell the truth and be straight up. Khalid knows he carries a lot of baggage and wants the girl to either accept it or leave him. In HEAVEN, Khalid doesnât want the girl to leave him but he knows she will and heâs trying to âbargainâ with the lord to make him an offer so he can be happy because he knows sheâs going to hurt him. And then in BAD LUCK, the girl officially leaves Khalid and he has to deal with a broken heart. He got attached too fast and he feels like all his past relationships never work out because he keeps falling in love with the wrong one, hence having bad luck. In OUTTA MY HEAD, heâs hurting after the break up. All he thinks about is her and what they had. In RIGHT BACK, he wants to be with her so bad. And he promises that he wonât move fast this time. In ALIVE, Khalid reveals that heâs just by himself sulking in his sadness bc he knows she left him for good. He blames himself for living out of spite and wishes that he couldâve spoken up and say the things he wanted to say. In SELF, he realizes that he needs to work on himself to become a better person and that heâs not doing it for validation of love from someone, heâs doing it for himself in order to grow as a person. In HUNDRED, he also realiZes that life moves on and he canât stay in his place of sadness, he needs to move on in order to be happy. And then finally, in FREE SPIRIT. He has officially moved on and let go of his attachment to her. He reminisces on the good times that they had, but ultimately knows that life goes on. The lesson here is that if we put our happiness in the hands of someone else and we move too fast to fall in âloveâ with the idea of love, in the end weâd get seriously hurt. We have to put our feelings first and never sacrifice them in the fear of hurting others because we will be hurt. And if we do get hurt, life eventually moves on and we have to reminisce on the good times and not be sad. Because at the end of the day all we have is ourselves and we have to take care of ourselves and our happiness first. We gotta let go in order to be happy.
