Itās funny how nobody ever seems to talk about what this song is actually about: what weāre told to strive for and the life weāre shown as an ideal will ultimately solve nothing because itās completely superficial. The narrator has achieved everything he was supposed to, and has only destroyed himself in the process and found no peace at all. The American Dream, if you want to look at it that way, is a lie. Like the entire album, itās an attack on modern soulless neoliberal capitalism; itās not just a sad song.

A heart that's full up like a landfill
A job that slowly kills you
Bruises that won't heal
You look so tired, unhappy
Bring down the government
They don't, they don't speak for us
I'll take a quiet life
A handshake of carbon monoxide
And no alarms and no surprises
No alarms and no surprises
No alarms and no surprises
Silent, silent
This is my final fit
My final bellyache with
No alarms and no surprises
No alarms and no surprises
No alarms and no surprises, please
Such a pretty house
And such a pretty garden
No alarms and no surprises (get me out of here)
No alarms and no surprises (get me out of here)
No alarms and no surprises, please (get me out of here)

I love how this video does so much with so little visuals. Just his expression and the reflections on the glass tell you so much, especially the lyrics scrolling by facing Thom. And then of course the water. Heās trapped in some kind of bizarre machine, routinely forced to perform this task of singing and then holding his breath, the purpose of which eludes us. Really eerie.

My parents would play this song to me as a baby on long car rides. I've always associated it with sleep and comfort, yet I hear the melancholy overtone listening today. I'm left with a strange feeling. Not joy, not sadness; not even nostalgia. I could only describe it as raw emotion. This song simply makes me want to feel my feelings, and I think that's pretty special.
