ADMIN. Worldbuilding Critique - Earth (Just For Fun) I was reading this blog post where the writer treats earth as if it was a worldbuilding project and I thought that was a delightful idea. So, just for fun, I submit my world to you for critiquing purposes. My world is earth - crit it as you would a conworld, and tell me what the most

2. Reply. [deleted] • 3 yr. ago. I mean, by definition it is building a world. Earth is a world, and putting a fictional twist on it in one's own writing is indeed building upon a world. Granted I will say that having Earth as a base for the setting will always disinterest me, but that's just out of personal preference.

Earth fails as a world-building exercise. There are many elements that go into making a world fit for fantasy storytelling. World-building is a skill any good fantasy writer needs to possess. The beef I'd like to share here though is with the shoddy job someone has done with Earth. It might have once served well as a setting for epic fantasy

Earth's Worldbuilding 'Blunders' I needed to make a map of a real-world location for a class project and during the process I noticed something odd, something that I'm sure we would have called each other out on if one of us had put it on a map of our own making. In a moment, I'll post a rough fantasy world map based on that location to see if

1. The only brute force way to 100% ruin a planet is to deorbit it. This would require nearly as much mass as the planet and would require a type 2 civilization, which probably has better plans than suicide. However our goal is to ruin it for the purposes of the aliens.

Bad worldbuilding is when you make it clear that resurrection is impossible, then throw that rule out for no other reason than you feel like writing a resurrection story right now. Right. Exactly this, right here. I'd argue that, in some cases, breaking the rules is the best thing you can do for a story, but….

Booster Spice. Three better: Alaska; Arizona; Australia. Efq iuwer scaling ub those locations is just completely out of whack! and some mechanics are just shoddily designed in general. In Alaska you have dangerous polar bears, moose even more dangerous than the bears, near permanent day or night depending on the time of year, weather so

The thing to understand about worldbuilding (in the narrower context of 'the natural features') is that it ought to be as natural and organic as possible, akin to the real world. ... is the largest forest on Earth and has a 1,200-mile belt, from the Atlantic Ocean to the Andes (Brazil). That ought to be enough, even if your world is massive

Worldbuilding is a critical component of speculative fiction no matter the genre. From constructing entire space empires in military scifi to planning a good masquerade in urban fantasy, every author will need to make choices about what to include in their world and how to do it. Fortunately, we have a long history of famous stories to learn from, both in what they did well and what they did

Worldbuilding is the process of constructing an imaginary world or setting, sometimes associated with a fictional universe. Developing the world with coherent qualities such as a history, geography, culture and ecology is a key task for many science fiction or fantasy writers. Worldbuilding often involves the creation of geography, a backstory, flora, fauna, inhabitants, technology and often

Leaning too heavily on tropes or archetypes. This is common in bad fantasy anime which makes heavy use of stock characters and settings.

In the absence of FTL, a "hard" sci-fi setting that begins on Earth has significant limitations on space travel as we already know quite a lot about the nearby locations that could realistically be visited. To address this, you can change the local environment of Earth (yet still be physically plausible) so that it differs from the real world.
