N163 (NAMCO 163) as a NES audio enhancement chip that was introduced in some NES games such Final Lap, Mappy-Land, and in the most recent NES demake "Pac-Man Championship Edition" (2020) extracted from NAMCO MUSEUM ARCHIVES Vol. 1 for the Nintendo Switch. I've seen tons of people making or covering music using the n163 chip, and im confused on

First try with N163. Main thing to show:-Mono, single channel delay built into instrument with a more "natural" wobbling between low and high harmonic content than you can achieve on square channels. With more channels, you could make more elaborate and impressive delays, but at the cost of brightness/fidelity and wave size.

Namco 163 audio - NESdev Wiki

The Namco 163 offers up to 8 additional sound channels that play wavetable samples while the 175 and 340 do not. Each waveform can be of a configurable length, and each channel has linear volume control. It has $80 bytes of sound RAM shared by channel registers and wavetable samples; at least $40 bytes are dedicated to samples, with more available if not all channels are used.

Wave Table. The NAMCO163 chip (also known as the NAMCO106) chip was an expansion sound chip for the Nintendo Famicom. The chip is one of the most impressive for the Famicom soundwise, right next to the VRC7; up to eight wavetable synthesis channels can be used in conjunction with the 2A03, the internal audio unit of the Famicom.

Episode 13: Namco 163 (Famicom Sound Expansion)

Namco's use of expansion audio years before Konami and Sunsoft probably wasn't due to any preferable treatment. Namco had a custom waveform sound generator in early arcade cabinets like Pac-Man, but Konami didn't develop the SCC chip for its arcade boards/MSX until 1985. Namco may have just been ahead of the curve in that regard. 2016-07-02T06

Limited scope for wave variance. Due to the fact that Namco N163 waveform values have a limited range of 0-15, this means that the steps of variance available can be quite dramatic due to the limitations. While I think this is okay for now, I think there might be other ways of tackling variance for the N163 expansion chip specifically.

This is a tool to generate waveforms for soundchips like the N163, Gameboy, PC-Engine/HuC6280, SCC (K051649/K052539), FDS and others by adusting the parameters. Parameters "Length" adjusts the total number of sample points present in the waveform, the default is 32. This corresponds to the horizontal axis on the graph.

Because of this, it adds the N163's expansion audio; the added channels are used primarily for the sound effects, though they are used in the music as well. Numerous slight graphical changes, such as enlarging the maze walls and making Pac-Man a bit rounder. There are several text and font changes as well.

N163 Multi-Wave Sampling in FamiTracker - nesdev.org

One thing I wanted to do is sample the Latin percussion (the timbale and bongo) each as multiple N163 waves in an instrument, to increase the fidelity. To do this I took the sample from the SPC, imported into Audacity, and used a plugin to turn waves into N163 wave steps. Perfect, except it did not sound anything like a drum when I pasted the
