You can use a hair straightening iron to seal mylar, and you can get them cheap for around £15. (probably $20 or so) i like the Ziplock mylar bags- but i heat seal them above the ziplock- the ziplock is for re-sealing after the bag has been cut open to keep the rest fresher for longer rather than just a big open bag.

Those sharp objects u mentioned are probably too large for your zip lock. Get a bigger zip lock to allow more 'space' for the sharp objects to move around the bag. Basha poles just leave them outside... To save space in your alice pack, sit on your zip lock to apply pressure for the air to escape before zipping up.

My idea is to use a non-chamber vacuum sealer with zip lock retort bags. I plan to evacuate the pouch, seal the zip lock, remove the pouch from the vacuum sealer and then heat seal the pouch properly. Then sterilise in a pressure cooker. I have done my research and lots of people say non-chamber vacuum sealers aren't suitable for retort

He used a higher-temp hobby iron to create a 1" wide seal above the ziplock. As long as the width of the heatseal is at least 1/2" and you've set the temperature correctly to melt the polyethylene inner layer to one another, your seal with or w/o a ziplock, will work fine. Most people forgot to seal the bags properly.
