I usually put auto aim while on horse to get animal samples or to clear some of the bounty hunter challenges; lasso targets/ using bolas or tracking arrows on them. Free aim on horse works better when you switch your horse movement to be relative to the horse instead for the camera's.

e. ehhhhhh, I've played most of the free-roam events, but definitely not super experienced with them Free roam PVP is different from showdown pvp, imo. Different approach and tactics. It's also worth pointing out I'm on PC so I've never played this game with aim assist, but I don't seem to struggle half as much with other free-aim games

If you get good at freeaim it is much better for picking targets and means you will be better at range where autoaim doesn't work. I use free aim for free roam and narrow autoaim for PvP. It's harder to get used to but I personally prefer it. i use free aim online 97% of the time.
