I believe shotokan karate is good for self defence but the karateka must also have an understanding of what would and would not work in a self defense scenario. karatedo (the way of karate) is an art form as well as a fighting system, it is way more than just blocking, kicking and punching. I think it's disingenuous to use Khabib as an example of karate blocks working, when in reality almost no karateka are training this movement, much less training it with aliveness. A few rare exceptions doesn't change that, and Khabib does nothing to justify karate blocks as practised by 99% of karateka.

It's not that they aren't blocks. It's that they are not "just" blocks. Each kata indicates specific usages based on the context of the movements, but even that is just the starting points. Zonal blocking/sweeping movements with the forearm are good emergency responses to heavy strikes that you can learn to build from.

As I understand it, he believed it went against the purpose he thought karate-do should have, emphasis on the -do. A simplified version of Funakoshis argument against free sparring as I remember it.
