In January 2020, a pilot experiences poor weather conditions over the McPherson Ranges.
Becoming disorientated, the pilot loses control of their aircraft and it collides with terrain. The pilot and their passenger are fatally injured.
Our panel of experts discuss the details around the accident and some of the weather patterns the pilot experienced that day.
They also share insights on a range of weather and forecasting related topics including:
ā¢ spatial disorientation
ā¢ how clouds are formed
ā¢ pre-flight and during the flight decisions
ā¢ having a plan B if the weather deteriorates.
Steve Creedy, senior CASA communications and media advisor and former aviation journalist, asks the panel in-depth questions about the accident and what typical adverse weather behaviour signs you need to look for when flying.

Donāt be that Bean!
If youāre flying these school holidays, you should always be courteous to fellow passengers.
When reclining, do it slowly and mention it to the passenger behind you that you're about to do it so they can move any spill-able or breakable items out of the way.

āItās a highlight of my career to be with the people at CASA to launch their new Human factors for pilotsā kit. Itās a real privilege to suggest this kit. This is truly your guide to your life and resilience.ā
These are significant words spoken by Richard de Crespigny, who launched the second edition of CASAās Safety behaviours: human factors for pilotsā resource kit at the Avalon Airshow earlier this month. He is probably best known as the pilot who safely landed Qantas Flight 32 after an explosion in the engine occurred shortly after take-off.
Check out the video and have a listen to Richard talk all things human factors at the launch:
