A while back I found this duckweed-covered Blanding’s Turtle (Emydoidea blandingii) while walking along a gravel path.

This medium-sized turtle is easily recognizable by their bright yellow throats. They’re long-lived animals, with records of up to 70 years old!

Blanding’s turtles are considered endangered (IUCN, last assessed 2010) in much of their range. Unlike other aquatic turtles, this species travels long distances (1mile+) on land in search of food and the perfect place to breed. This means Blanding’s turtles require a lot of habitat, making them highly susceptible to road mortality and habitat loss.

A few days ago I found this smooth earthsnake (Virginia valeriae) while flipping rocks on a shady hillside.

This species is considered small and typically ranges from 7 to 13 inches (18 to 33 cm) in length. They aren’t venomous so they’re harmless to humans and eat soft-bodied invertebrates like earthworms, slugs, and insect larvae. Smooth earthsnakes are not considered endangered or threatened (IUCN). However, like most other animals, habitat destruction and fragmentation can pose risks to local populations.
