Seeing the fan casting for the Live action Rapunzel has been interesting. Seeing all the debate about whether a south Asian actress should play Rapunzel made me want to give my 2 cents.
Should A south Asian woman play Rapunzel?
Yes and no. No because I don’t want a South Asian woman playing Rapunzel in DISNEY’S live action. A live action is supposed to bring to life the original work except with real actors.
In Haile Bailey’s case the little mermaid had been made in a time where there was still black predjuce and since Ariel had no actually religion and was just a mermaid it didn’t matter who played her it was Disney’s way to make up for the lack of diverse characters.
However Rapunzel is different she was made in the 2010s black characters were being represented they were getting recognition Tiana had been made Jasmine had been created. Rapunzel or more specifically Tangled didn’t have the same background as The little mermaid. I’m not saying Rapunzel’s German she needs to be represented that way because that means nothing there are many iterations of Rapunzel’s story. So why change Rapunzel’s story the whole purpose of live actions is to bring the characters we saw in animation to life.

I don’t think having an Indian Rapunzel is bad after all Rapunzel isn’t just one iteration but if we do make and Indian Rapunzel make it in the surrounding culture in an Indian setting. I truly believe Disney won’t do justice to the religion if they make a movie surrounding an Indian rapunzel especially with its recent flips like WISH or elementals Disney is not doing well.

I also don’t believe Maitreyi would make a good Rapunzel her signature personality is too bold and yes Rapunzel is sarcastic but she also has an innocence and childish curiosity of the new world and I don’t think Maitreyi can replicate that. You can say it’s just acting Tom holand isn’t Spider-Man either but his acting personality on screen and in other films is usually adventurous and a dare devil it’s an acting signature. Maitryi’s acting signature wouldn’t fit Rapunzel’s character

So I’m all for an Indian Rapunzel just not made by Disney.

anyone remember Allen and Vira (probably no one)

Well I finally drew them and am making a proper story I think 🤔

Vira is Indian and Allen is just a dragon unexpectedly learning about the culture since he’s pretending to be an exchange student.

Vira’s parents have no idea

I know “Vira” doesn’t sound Indian but then again I know a guy who’s name is John and he speaks Telugu perfectly. He’s Indian btw
