I've started a mailing list for archers and coaches that is purely live coaching demonstrations sent out each week.

This is unscripted, unedited and unfiltered content that is from our weekly squad training sessions, workshops and clinics.

I'll be continuing to produce comprehensive topic videos for YouTube and the Masterclass, but for anyone who wants a peek Behind the Scenes, you can access the free mailing list here:

There's always a buzz of positive energy around the new year, and so it is now great to put some time aside to review your goals for 2024!

Goal setting is certainly not a "one and done" exercise that can be done in the first week of January and then left until next year... it's more of a discipline that should be reviewed, updated, tweaked, revised and revamped.

This week in my Behind the Scenes mailing list, I want to share a little known aspect of goal setting, which is called "Barrier Setting".
----
The reason we set goals, is to set a direction in which to strive. Goals move us forward. Barriers however, are what hold us back.

Everyone loves thinking about their goals, but why don't people consider their barriers?

Well, it is downright uncomfortable to even think about!

No one ever got rich telling you that YOU might be holding yourself back...

YOUR flaws, inadequacies, inaction, indecision or mindset are probably the blind spots you need to shine a light on from time to time...
----
In this week's Behind the Scenes video I walk the team through a Barrier Setting exercise, where we identify the five types of barrier that hold people back, and discuss the approaches to overcome them.
---
Behind the Scenes videos drop every Friday at 3pm AEST. You can sign up for the mailing list where I send weekly exclusive videos below:

Well done Team Solo Archery for the first day of the Sol2023 XVII Pacific Games !

Im in Honiara supporting the Solomon Islands Archery Team. Today was the first day of competition with the Men's/Women's Recurve and Compound Ranking and mixed team eliminations.

I am happy to report that of the 12 Solomon Island athletes competing, every one of them shot a PB in the ranking round! Some of them adding over 100, and even over 200 points to their previous tournament best since the Oceania Championships earlier in 2023...

There was also plenty of excitement in the mixed team matches, and a couple of major upsets. Australia ๐Ÿ‡ฆ๐Ÿ‡บ was knocked out by Tahiti ๐Ÿ‡ต๐Ÿ‡ซ in the 2nd round in a shoot off, and Tonga ๐Ÿ‡น๐Ÿ‡ด had a great run by knocking out New Zealand new ๐Ÿ‡ณ๐Ÿ‡ฟ in the first round, and then besting New Caledonia new ๐Ÿ‡ณ๐Ÿ‡จ in the 2nd to earn a spot in the Gold final! Great job Tonga.

Team Solo ๐Ÿ‡ธ๐Ÿ‡ง Recurve lead by John and Janet shot against @archeryaus ๐Ÿ‡ฆ๐Ÿ‡บ @ryantyack and @laurapaeglisarchery. Team Solo ๐Ÿ‡ธ๐Ÿ‡ง shot fantastic, and did their rotations, communication and timing flawlessly, which is a huge success for their first ever mixed team matchplay for their country. Aus was just too strong!

Team Solo ๐Ÿ‡ธ๐Ÿ‡ง compound also did great. They unfortunately lost to Team Samoa ๐Ÿ‡ผ๐Ÿ‡ธ, but shot great, especially considering that only last Monday was the first time ever that they got to shoot compound bows ๐Ÿ˜ฎ

The remoteness of the Solomon Islands means there are real logistical challenges for getting the right stuff, and thanks to Eliza Archery they got the equipment on time for the Pacific Games.

I am sincerely impressed with how well the archers have adapted to a completely new bow type.

----

Tomorrow is Olympic Continental Qualifiers in the morning then Para ranking in the afternoon.

The Rogue Archery Rookie League is under way!

This is a program designed for developing archers who are working towards competition level, but are still learning the ropes... and it's awesome!

Here's the problem:
Archery is different to many other sports, in that it requires quite a high level of competency in order to even participate in competitions...

If you sign up for soccer, volleyball, tennis or athletics, you can play a game or participate in a competition, today on day one!

However, in order to shoot a 72 arrow scoring round at official distances and have any success, it takes a while to build up the technique, bow fitness and strength. Usually, this might take 6-12 months of consistent training.

This is more similar to a sport like boxing. If you take up boxing, you wouldn't jump in the ring and fight on day one, would you? This would be a recipie for getting your teeth knocked out!

In boxing, you'd first need to learn the basic stance, footwork, the different punches and combinations. You'd also need to strengthen your body and fitness.

If you took up boxing today, you'd be many months away from even throwing a punch with the intention of hitting someone...

Archery, is similar to this.

Without any regular competition for developing archers, most never make it to even participate in any competition, and engagement and retention drops off sharply in the first 12 months. As an archer, you will have seen this happen.

So there is a massive need for programs to increase engagement, and provide a friendly competition format for archers within their first 12 months in the sport - the Rookies!

This is where the Rookie League comes in. It's a weekly handicapped matchplay league, shot at 18m. As their scores improve, they graduate from a 122cm target, to an 80cm, to a 40cm!

This means that no matter your level, you will be challenged!

I've been so impressed with the progress that we've seen in this format, as well as great sportsmanship, and many of the next generation of competitive archers will emerge from these types of programs!

I'm so proud of the team today.

3 golds ๐Ÿฅ‡๐Ÿฅ‡๐Ÿฅ‡
3 PB's

Haleemah U14 ๐Ÿฅ‡ and shot a perfect score (300/300) at final distance ๐Ÿ˜ฒ

Amelie U16 ๐Ÿฅ‡, PB at her first outdoor competition

Izzy U18 ๐Ÿฅ‡, PB at her first ever competition, only started archery 6 months ago

Ilias has been nursing a neck muscle spasm the last few weeks. We finally got a good release thanks to the amazing Sandra Steele @total_body_fusion

Ilias followed the game plan like a champ. We definately didn't want to aggravate it, with Greek national trials and the @archeryaust champs around the corner, so rather than pull out, he shot within his comfort zone, and stepped down when necessary. This takes COURAGE to do in an event.

Well done to the whole team!
