Is it really possible to defy gravity?

Researchers from Lehigh University in the US have engineered tiny particles they call micro-rollers by coating microscopic grains of polymethyl methacrylate plastic in iron oxide.

Activating a rotating magnetic field near a sloped mound of the particles was found to exert torque on each individual micro-roller.

These micro-rollers then started to rotate around their axes, forcing the particles to temporarily come together and act in unison. The 'sand' of the micro-roller particles drove itself up and even overcame the pull of gravity.

After using equations that describe the flow of granular materials, the researchers were able to show that these particles were moving like a granular material, except they were flowing uphill.

The uphill flow is referred to as a negative angle of repose, one that's caused by a negative coefficient of friction that actually boosts movement rather than slow it down as would usually be the case.

The angle of repose typically represents the steepest angle at which a material remains stable on a slope. A negative angle of repose implies that the material is moving uphill against the force of gravity.

Until now, heat pumps have mostly been restricted to residential applications due to their low temperatures.

But this first-ever very high-temperature heat pump can deliver heat at up to 550 degrees Celsius even with -70°C outside temperature.

With such a potential, it could revolutionize sand battery & make it 3 times cheaper than before by eliminating the resistive heating technique.
