Will blue light from phone and computer screens damage your skin? š¤ I have a whole video where I talk about it here:Ā youtu.be/KkrBDpY14qkĀ
First off, what is āblue lightā?
šWhen we think of the types of energy emitted from the sun, we all know about UV light; itās what weāre trying to protect against so we donāt get sunburns, skin cancer, and other types of aging sun damage. However, the sun also emits VISIBLE LIGHT, which includes all the colors of the rainbow. Blue (and purple) light gets the most attention because itās the closest in energy to UV and thus has the potential to also be damaging to skin.
What are the effects of blue light on skin?
šThe data on the effects of blue light on skin pales in comparison to what we know about how UV light affects skin. Blue light can generate damaging molecules in the skin, called free radicals, which IN THEORY lead to collagen breakdown. It can also cause increased pigmentation in those with darker skin. But, it takes much HIGHER doses of visible light (compared to UV) to create these changes.
Does a computer or phone screen emit enough blue light to be problematic?
šNot really. The blue light from the sun is hundreds to thousands times more intense than what a screen emits (depending on the device).
If you are going to care about blue light, then care about the blue light that comes from the sun. Sun-protective clothing is the best way to fend off visible light, because UV filters in sunscreen do absolutely NOTHING to block it. Iron oxide, an ingredient often found in foundation and tinted SPF, also helps block blue light, but there is no consensus about what % of iron oxide is needed to be effective.
My current thoughts: donāt lose sleep overĀ #bluelight. If youāre protecting yourself adequately from UV exposure (avoiding mid-day sun, wearing SPF, and using sun-protective clothing) that is absolutely enough.
Congrats if you made it to the bottom š„“ Share if you learned something!
Wide-brim hats are a vibe, okay? āļø Sunscreen only gets us so far in terms of sun protection. Wide-brim hats and visors, other sun-protective clothing, and avoiding mid-day sun are also incredibly important strategies in mitigating UV damage to the skin. Protect yourself in multiple ways!
