Calling all experienced expats! We've already gotten MORE suggestions to add to our latest video. What would you add? Do we need a Part II? What should be in it? Let us know!😲😯😊
Hi All! This week we're sharing our story about why we decided to chuck it all and run away from home to become expats (and how it didn't work out as we planned). And don't forget, if you're 50 and better, and trying to crack the code on midlife (besides traveling), join us in the newsletter, link in pinned comment!
Are you thinking about moving after the kids have left and you're done with work? Are you thinking about moving in retirement? In this video, we talk about the things you should look for when finding a new home at midlife. Spoiler alert: these may not be the same things you looked for when you were younger!
This is our first video on this kind of topic, so please let us know what you think. (And also, we'll get better at this and actually have a more formal ending and conclusion!) 🤣🤣🤣🤷♀️🤷♀️🤷♀️
And don't forget that if you like these topics, you can crack the code of midlife with our free bi-weekly(ish) newsletter! notes-from-the-road.beehiiv.com/
Hi everyone! Would you be interested in seeing videos on navigating midlife, like getting ready for retirement, finding a new place to live, adapting to an empty nest, getting and staying healthy, etc?
Trying to stay healthy at midlife--especially when you're traveling for long periods--requires dedication. In this week's newsletter, we explain how planning and researching can help keep you on track. notes-from-the-road.beehiiv.com/p/journey-to-bette…
Are you interested in diving deeper on healthspan, and how to stay healthier, for longer? Head on over to the newsletter, where we talk about a recent health challenge and what Kristen is learning about "bending the curve" on your health to keep problems at bay. notes-from-the-road.beehiiv.com/p/bending-the-curv…
When you're planning for a long trip, what do you look for in a short-term apartment? What's a "must have" and what's a "nice to have?" We got really lucky with our latest trip to Edinburgh. Here's a tour of our flat, and some details about how we go about selecting a place.
Another great thing about bookstores when you’re far from home is that they have all kinds of events. You can spend time catching up on your reading, learning about new topics, and meeting local authors and experts. Last night’s event: a professor from the University of Edinburgh talks about his latest book on the West’s fascination with Asia: www.toppingbooks.co.uk/books/christopher-harding/t…

A great excuse for getting out of the house after dinner!
Another thing to look for when slow traveling or finding a new place to live: coffee shops! A good example is here in Edinburgh where there’s almost one on every corner. Some are small independents, some are medium-sized local chains, and others are global chains like this Starbucks with a panoramic view of busy streets. But if you’re working from a home office, getting out and soaking up the energy of the rest of the world in any of these can keep you energized.
Next on our slow travel list of things that keep us happy and healthy: taking a day trip to another city. On Saturday, we took the train from Edinburgh to Glasgow, and visited Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum. Getting out on a day's adventure, with a new train system, landscape, and city, keeps us on our toes mentally and physically. Having these options on our long trips, and/or where we choose to settle, is an important part of finding the right place.
In 2021, we sold or gave away most of our things and set off for the EU to explore a new life.
It didn't work out exactly as we thought it would. We share our story, what we learned, and our next chapter, here.
This channel is about designing a new life at midlife. Sometimes it's about traveling and finding our new place in the world at midlife. Sometimes it's about the midlife adventure more generally: the reinvention, the loss, the excitement, the confusion, the disorientation. Empty nests, retirement, and all the other triumphs and challenges of midlife: we're here for all of it. If you're interested in this content (mostly NOT travel-oriented, FYI) you can check out our newsletter at notes-from-the-road.beehiiv.com.
