We just launched my newest instructional video: āJiu-Jitsu For Old Guys: Fundamental Gameplan.ā For the first time, I put together my entire game in just one instructional. I never felt I was the best or most talented athlete in Jiu-Jitsu, but because I had a solid game plan, I was able to win all the major tournaments multiple times.
I grew up hearing that my game is great for old guys because, when Iām on the bottom, Iām always playing half guard, and when Iām on top, Iām always passing the guard from the knees. Thatās why itās called āJiu-Jitsu For Old Guys: Fundamental Gameplan.ā

Many times when I teach classes at my academy, I avoid focusing solely on my A-Game. I always want to ensure that my students learn Jiu-Jitsu as a whole, not just Bernardoās A-Game. Lately, Iāve been trying something new that has been both effective and fun: instead of figuring out non-A-Game techniques to teach, I watch the A-Game of top instructors. I use the new feature we launched on our BJJFanatics App, which allows me to download specific moves rather than entire courses. This way, I can have 3 or 4 sequential moves from a top instructor on my phone, even without internet access.
Today, for example, I taught the side closed guard game from Xande Ribeiro, who is probably the best in the world at it. Instead of trying to teach āside closed guardā myself, I thought, why not copy from the best? Iāve always been open-minded and humble enough to understand that I donāt know everything. Especially with specific moves, there will always be people better than me. I have no shame in admitting that Iām teaching my students a move from someone else. I know what Iām good at and what Iām not. If Iām not an expert on a move, Iād much rather copy the expert. What are your thoughts?
