I started coming to Detroit regularly when I was a little girl, too young to be running around anywhere, and yet somehow I found myself trying to find my way through a maze of black plastic in the Packard Plant. In a different life I would have been studying for my SATs. An altogether different life chose me. It’s 30 years this year that I crammed into a half broke down car with a bunch clinically insane Kentucky ravers and headed for a city that most of America had turned a blind eye to. But where others might have seen ruin, we saw possibility, we made friends that lasted a lifetime, we did everything wrong and we came out exactly where we were supposed to be: Hart Plaza. As a midwesterner, I can’t explain the deep honour it is to be asked to play this weekend. I was a ticket buyer every year like everyone else till very recently. I was at Old Miami giving the last full measure of devotion like other raver left around here who was worth a damn. I can remember the early years when there weren’t enough hotels, restaurants or working elevators to deal with the hundreds of thousands of weirdos that showed up. The city is so different now, but my respect for the lifers, the people whose events are the acid soup from which your next favourite artist emerges: that’s forever. I don’t have to tel you which afterparties I’m referring to. You just know. It’s all still here. Detroit still lifts us in dance. I’m so glad to be here. See you tonight at 8pm at the MAW/ Stargate stage. If you have a dream, start dreaming now. You’re in the right place for a miracle if you’re in Detroit. I’m thinking especially of Kelli Hand (my mother in techno) and Huck this weekend, who live on inside the very sounds we’ll play and here. They can never truly be lost. Have you ever seen a grown woman cry? Y’all! I got my first ever gold record!!! Italy is a culture of passion. People proudly show feelings. Yesterday on a rooftop in Milan, I was nearly overcome with my own feelings when I was presented my first gold record for Mercy. It was a total surprise from my team here but nothing about this happening in Italy was surprising. My connection to this country, the heart, the art, the passion: it was immediate and bone deep. Italia, I am so so so in love with you. Thank you for always welcoming me home and for hearing this music in a way that no one else has. I am forever yours. And you are forever mine.
